SMALL ARMS MANAGEMENT
Thanks to the FN® SAM software it is possible to assign a weapon to a user and to record when the weapon was taken from the armoury. The FN SmartCore® shot counter is not equipped with a GPS or tracking system, so that it cannot be detected when out of the range of the reader (a few centimeters).
It is possible to preconfigure a number of shots in the FN SmartCore® for a weapon already in service. To retrofit an FN MINIMI® light machine gun, you just need to replace the pistol grip. As far as the FN SCAR® rifle is concerned, the latest versions are FN SmartCore® ready, meaning that they can receive an FN SmartCore®. Previous models can be retrofitted to receive the FN SmartCore®.
It is possible to place RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) tags on various accessories and non-FN weapons in an armoury. It is thus possible to trace these accessories and weapons (without having the shot counting function) in the FN® SAM software and to digitize the management of the whole armoury.
The battery life of the FN SmartCore® in an FN MINIMI® light machine gun exceeds 10 years and depends on the number of readings per day/week. For the FN SCAR®, the system is self-powered by the movement of the weapon’s parts. The lifespan of the FN SmartCore® is therefore as long as the weapon’s.
No, none of the components of the FN® Smart Armoury are covered by ITAR or EAR regulations.
